Sort of a Dive
We're purveyors of the fine dive bar. Over the past eight weeks, we've done the painstaking, entirely necessary work of visiting more of them than we're willing to admit, all in service of this list.
We mean dive in the least derogatory way possible. A place you can walk into in whatever you left the house wearing, hair uncombed, and nobody notices. A place with pool, or darts if you're lucky enough to find them. A place where you can have a drink elbow to elbow with someone twice your age. It has regulars, and it loves them anyway.
One rule: it has to pour something stronger than beer and wine. A real bar, not a beer garden in disguise. Here's where we landed. Not ranked — just seven of the best.

Oceanside
A near-perfect beach town dive. Dated decor, odd mirrors, old bar signs, and a vintage mermaid mannequin in a fish tank that watches over the whole room. Rowdy on weekends and event nights, but a great daytime stop if you want dim and divey with a little hair of the dog. Bartenders are great, the locals friendlier. No smoking inside, though the steady trail of regulars through the patio says otherwise.

The kind of bar that feels like home before you've even ordered. Friendly bartenders, friendlier regulars, good drinks, good music. Pool and darts both — darts alone are hard to come by around here. We kept saying we wanted to move in.

San Marcos
Churchill's is an English pub through and through — a beer list deep enough to get lost in and a dart board that sees real use. Get the fries. Good ones are rarer at a dive bar than you'd think, and these hold up. The whole place runs warm and lively, the kind of spot where you end up staying for one more round.

Oceanside
A biker-and-vet bar with a warm, familiar crowd holding down the pool tables and some of the best vintage beer signs in North County. Bartenders are no-nonsense but genuinely kind. Open, airy, high ceilings — a different shape than most dives. Outdoor seating and a smoking area round it out.

Cardiff
Duke's Cardiff Office is a proper neighborhood dive — tucked into a strip mall, bar just inside the door, pool tables in the back. Nothing about it tries too hard, and that's exactly the appeal. Friendly bartenders, a small but well-appointed whiskey selection, and regulars who'll treat you like one within a visit or two.

Pour House is the one to hit if you're after live music. Shows run most nights of the week, with Wednesdays reserved for open mic — plus karaoke and the occasional vinyl DJ set when there's no band booked. It's a great place to catch a band you've never heard of and leave a fan, good drinks in hand the whole time.

Cardiff
The Shanty has meant "welcome home" since 1964, and looks the part — the same wood bar and walls for over sixty years, just north of San Elijo State Beach. Inside is classic dive; outside is a proper patio, fire pits and all, built for staying past one drink. Pool, cornhole, a jukebox worth feeding, and food trucks most weekends. Dogs welcome, which tells you most of what you need to know.
