Issue No. 1: Feeling Sort of New Here

North County is its own ecosystem — slower mornings, faster sunsets, and a coffee and bar culture that doesn't get enough credit. This is for the places worth your time, not your feed. Welcome to The Sort.

ISSUE NO. 01 · NORTH COUNTY, SAN DIEGO

Feeling Sort of New Here

North County is its own ecosystem — not a suburb of San Diego, not an extension of LA. It's slower mornings and too-fast sunsets, a coastline that doesn't try as hard as it could, and a confidence the rest of the county hasn't quite figured out yet. We have our own coffee culture, our own bar culture, our own version of a good Tuesday night.

That's what this newsletter is for. Welcome to The Sort.

A few things to know up front: this is free, it comes out every Thursday, and it's built around a feeling, not a category.

Feeling Sort of Stingy gets you the best deals.
Feeling Sort of Romantic gets you the date night.
Feeling Sort of Awestruck gets you the best views.
You get the idea.

The weekly issue is free and public — it lives on the site and lands in your inbox every Thursday if you subscribe.

But subscribers get two more things nobody else does.

Every six weeks or so, we publish Sorted — a practical, subscriber-only guide to navigating North County and San Diego. First up: Sorted: North County Transit District — everything you need to actually ride the Coaster, the Sprinter, and the routes that connect them. Free to subscribers, useful enough to forward.

On the first Monday of every month, we drop Sort Saves — a small, curated handful of exclusive deals and offers from local spots. Not a coupon circular. Just a few genuinely good ones, from places we'd actually send you to.

Both are free with your subscription. That's the whole pitch.

As this thing grows, we'll crowdsource the best of each North County neighborhood, and we'll chase down the rumors too: is the Buccaneer Cafe burrito actually the best breakfast burrito in town, like everyone keeps telling us?

We're going to find out.

Here's what that actually means in practice: everything in here has been researched and vouched for — visited, talked about, cross-referenced with people who know. Not surfaced because it's trending, not chosen because it photographs well, not here because someone got paid to say so. If you're after whatever's currently going viral, there are plenty of accounts for that already. This isn't one of them.

This is for the places with real culture behind them — the ones worth your actual time, not just your camera roll.

One more thing — we love San Diego, too. North County might be its own thing, but the big sister city is less than an hour south and always worth the trip, especially by train. (We will not shut up about public transit. Consider yourself warned.) Semi-regular issues will head down the coast — Coaster recommended, window seat required — and will explore the best ways for us northern folk to spend a day or an evening down the coast in SD proper.

We've wanted to do this for a long time — North County deserved it, and we figured it was about time someone did. What we weren't expecting was how genuinely overwhelming the response has already been before we've even sent a single issue. Turns out y'all were feeling sort of hungry for this.

We're so glad you're here. Tell us what you want to see, or send us a lead, at hello@thesort.news.

Anyway, here's a first rec to whet your appetite:

Sort of a Sleeper

Shoots Fish & Beer: The Potato Taco

Oceanside

The potato taco is sneaky good. The kind of order that sounds like an afterthought and turns out to be the move — the perfect sponge to soak up that West Coast IPA you ordered without thinking too hard about it. A solid first stop if you're getting to know the neighborhood the right way.

New here too, in a sense. Glad you're sorting through it with us.
