Every Thursday, when we're feeling Sort of ready for the weekend, a new issue drops. Each one is built around a feeling: Feeling Sort of Stingy? We've got the best happy hour steals and budget bites under $15\. Sort of Awestruck? Here are the views — drinks with them, hikes to them, dinners in front of them. Sort of Onaka pekopeko? (That's Japanese for "my stomach is growling.") We're on the hunt for the best takeout sushi in North County and we will find it. Every issue goes deep on one thing. No lists of 47 places. No "hidden gems." Just the good stuff, sorted. **What you'll find in The Sort:** **Sort of Stingy** — best budget bites, happy hours, and grocery finds **Sort of Inspired** — places to learn something new **Sort of Awestruck** — the best views (with drinks, on hikes, at dinner) **Sort of Ravenous** — best places to eat a lot, unapologetically **Sort of Peckish** — girl dinner spots and the best charcuterie situations **Sort of Romantic** — date nights worth planning **Sort of Fashiorous** — boutiques and thrift shops worth the detour **Sort of Altruistic** — the best local orgs and volunteer opps **Sort of Cultured** — museums, art events, theatre, and what's actually worth going to **Sort of Dancy** — the nights out, the clubs, the spots where things happen after 9pm **Sort of Fresh** — farmers markets and local produce worth waking up early for **Sort of Cinematic** — the best movie theaters (yes, this matters) ...and more, as the feelings arise. Have a rec? Disagree with one of our picks? Know somewhere better? Let us know at hello@thesort.news or shout it out on socials (@justthesort). So this issue goes big instead of narrow: a collection of museums, galleries, and art spaces across seven neighborhoods, organized so you can go deep on whichever corner of the county you're already in. No firsthand ratings here — these are public institutions and working galleries, researched and vouched for. Go stand in front of something on purpose. Oceanside Sort of Cultured Oceanside Museum of Art Oceanside The county's contemporary and regional art anchor, a block off the pier. Right now that means **Changing Terrain: Regional Artists Interpret Our Landscape**, on view through January 2027\. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm. Sober, California sober, or sober curious and still want thoughtfully-crafted drink options — this one's for you. We started at Valle, where Chef Roberto Alcocer treats his non-alcoholic pairings as seriously as anything with alcohol in it, and kept going from there: a collection of spots across five North County neighborhoods, and not a pre-batched virgin daiquiri in sight. Sort of Clear · Featured Valle Oceanside We asked **Chef Roberto Alcocer** — the James Beard semifinalist behind Valle, a Michelin-recommended kitchen in Oceanside — to pick one pairing off the non-alcoholic menu. He chose **the Manzanita**: green apple juice, verjus, green grape juice, fennel seed and salt, poured alongside a local rock cod ikejime fillet with a serrano and fennel pollen beurre blanc. The acidity pulls out the fish's sweetness and salinity, while the fennel and serrano echo the dish's aromatics right back. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/09/Valle129-2-1.jpg) 📷 credit: Dee Sandoval "To me, the word pairing means a true marriage between the flavors and aromas of the food and the drink … The drink doesn't simply accompany the food; it completes it." — Roberto Alcocer, Executive Chef, Valle 2025 James Beard Award Semifinalist [Get directions](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Valle%2C+222+N+Pacific+St%2C+Oceanside%2C+CA&ref=thesort.news) · [Reserve on Tock](https://www.exploretock.com/valleoceanside?ref=thesort.news) Sort of Clear Herb & Sea Encinitas Herb & Sea's non-alcoholic list reads like a real cocktail menu because it is one. **The Pentire N/A Cocktail** comes three ways — spritz, dirty martini, or rosemary & tonic — built on an actual non-alcoholic spirit rather than juice standing in for liquor. **Luke, I Did It Again** keeps things brighter: hibiscus tea, strawberry, vanilla, lemon and soda water. [Get directions](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Herb+%26+Sea%2C+131+W+D+St%2C+Encinitas%2C+CA&ref=thesort.news) · [See menu](https://www.herbandsea.com/menu?ref=thesort.news) Sort of Clear Vintana Escondido Vintana's **"Free Spirited"** menu treats zero-proof as its own category, not a substitution list. **The Prickly Without The Pear** leans into Baja flavor — Lyre's non-alcoholic tequila, coconut cream, fresh lime and prickly pear — while **the Garden Gimlet** stays herbal and clean with Lyre's non-alcoholic gin, basil, lime and mint. Order it at happy hour or with dinner; either way, nobody's asking why you're not drinking. Both sit under 0.5% ABV and are on tap year-round, no separate ask required. Their **Vitality Tonics** program — called one of the city's most ambitious non-alcoholic beverage programs by *San Diego Magazine* — aren't really mocktails so much as their own category: force-carbonated, ingredient-driven, built more like a tasting menu than a bar list. **The Sienna** pairs granny smith apple with Japanese barley, marigold miso and citrus; **the Kaffa** runs coffee against cordyceps, koseret and stone fruit. Order one alongside the çılbır and call it a very good morning. Its non-alcoholic pairing gets the same care as the wine list — a custom, zero-proof beverage arc built to run course for course through the full tasting menu, not a single afterthought mocktail. Vista Misadventure & Co. is tucked into a Vista strip mall with an entrance that's easy to miss on purpose — fitting, for a place called Misadventure. The mocktail to order is the **Old Thymer** — raspberry, thyme, vanilla, lime and soda, finished with fresh thyme. The inside vibe is moody lighting, live jazz, and a cocktail program built around a real mission: their gold medal vodka is distilled from rescued, excess baked goods that would otherwise go to waste. Their tagline says it best: "Saving the world is worth a shot." That means sending you to real spots worth your time. It also means sending more of you through the doors of businesses doing this place right — the ones without a marketing budget or a food blogger on retainer, just consistently good work. Sort of Wired Vigilante Oceanside · Vista Vigilante is the go-to for a reason. Order the cold brew, add a lemon blueberry scone, and you can't start your day off wrong. Buy a growler to take home, or grab a piece of Oceanside merch — proceeds feed their own Vigilante Gives Foundation, which puts 1% of sales toward causes like criminal justice reform and climate action. It's basically a perfect morning, already planned out for you. Or post up on the patio at their Leucadia spot, shared with Haggo's, if that's more your speed. Budget a few extra minutes, and a few extra dollars, because you will buy something. North County spent weeks under an actual heat advisory — coastal towns pushing toward 90, inland well past it — and relief only started to show up the day before this landed in your inbox. We'd already gone looking for wings in the AC by then, so here's what a few weeks of misery turned up: seven North County spots, in almost every style we could find. Brewery wings, pizza-shop wings, Thai wings — if it was fried or baked and tossed in something, we tracked it down. Sort of Hot Churchill's Pub & Grille San Marcos Jumbo breaded wings with a choice of sauce, and the list is not short: Buffalo, Sweet Chili, Spicy BBQ, Ivan's Revenge (very spicy), Guinness BBQ, Blackberry BBQ, Cajun dry rub, Old Bay dry rub, Lemon Pepper dry rub or Churchill's own DIE Rub. Served with carrots and celery, six-wing minimum per sauce. Their buffalo cauliflower is worth ordering alongside, if you're sharing. The service is another story: expect minimal attention from the seven-plus taproom staff standing around, some detective work figuring out which tray at the pickup shelf is yours when your buzzer goes off, and to clear your own table after. We keep going back for the wings and beer anyway. Crispy, gluten-free, Thai-style marinated, served with jaew dip — a smoky, nutty, sweet-and-tangy dipping sauce that does more work than ranch ever has. Prepare to marvel at how crispy and saucy they are for something that never sees a fryer. The best one took the most convincing. For this one, we didn't Yelp our way through North County. We asked. Neighbors, Lyft drivers, bartenders, a priest, a hairdresser — anyone who'd talk tacos with us. Most people gave up their favorites (and not-so-favorites) without much of a fight. One person didn't. It took real convincing before Valerie would part with her spot, and she was right to guard it. Without her sacrifice, we never would have found our anchor rec below. This one's for you, Valerie. This is the first edition of our Value Taco Map: North County's best tacos for the money — not always the cheapest, just always worth it. Sort of Ravenous [Tacos Alex](https://tacosalex.wixsite.com/tacosalex?ref=thesort.news) San Marcos The $1.99 al pastor taco, fully loaded, might be the best-tasting deal on this whole map — not just cheap, genuinely delicious. Everything's made fresh until they run out, and once it's gone for the day, it's gone. For the serious end of the menu, buche, cabeza and tripa are all excellent too. It's onsite ordering only — no calling in, no delivery. It's an easy trip by train, though — about two blocks from the Civic Center Coaster/Sprinter stop. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/IMG_0475-1.JPG) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/IMG_0482-1.JPG) Sort of Ravenous [El Pueblo Mexican Food](https://elpueblomex.com/locations/el-pueblo-mexican-food-in-del-mar/?ref=thesort.news) Del Mar The fish taco is $1.39 and it's not a gimmick — battered, fried, dressed simple, and worth ordering three of in one sitting. Happy hour runs daily, so there's rarely a bad time to make it a full stop instead of a drive-by and the margaritas don't miss. Sort of Ravenous [Primo Thunder Market](https://primothundermarketoceanside.com/?ref=thesort.news) Oceanside Tacos run $1.59 any day of the week — already fair. But Tuesdays and Fridays, they drop to 79 cents each, salsa and lemons thrown in free. Buche, carne asada, pollo asado, carnitas or adobada, plus a newer birria taco on those same discount days. It's a market first and a taco counter second, and the counter alone is worth the stop. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/IMG_7680.JPG) Sort of Ravenous [Vallarta Express](https://vallartaexpress.com/locations/carlsbad/?ref=thesort.news) Carlsbad Not cheap — $7 to $8 a taco, receipt-verified — but these aren't street-taco sized. Shrimp, carne asada, carnitas and adobada all come out stuffed enough that the two of us could barely finish four between us. Open 24 hours with a drive-thru, for whenever the craving actually hits. Ours hit at 11:56 p.m. — we have the receipt — and yes, it was delicious. Sort of Ravenous [Frida's Taqueria](https://eatsfridastaqueria.com/mapa/?ref=thesort.news) Vista Two deals worth planning around: fish tacos two for $6 on Fridays, and everything else — cabeza, birria, adobada, your call — at $1.99 on Tuesdays. We've had the cabeza, the birria, and the adobada, and all three earned the hype. Just know the line gets long, especially on deal days. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/IMG_0493.JPG) Sort of Ravenous [Four Tunas Fish & Bar](https://fourtunasfishbar.com/?ref=thesort.news) Escondido A seafood taco counter that doesn't cut corners to hit a price point. Fish tacos run $3.50 regular, $2.25 on Taco Tuesday, with a smoked tuna version for $3.25 the same day that has its own following. The octopus taco is worth a special trip on its own. Sort of a Sleeper — bonus round [El Pueblo Mexican Food, again](https://elpueblomex.com/locations/el-pueblo-mexican-food-in-del-mar/?ref=thesort.news) Del Mar One more, off the value map: the lengua taco at El Pueblo isn't the cheapest thing on the menu, but it might be the best bite in this whole issue. Over the past eight weeks, we've done the painstaking, entirely necessary work of visiting more of them than we're willing to admit, all in service of this list. We mean dive in the least derogatory way possible. A place you can walk into in whatever you left the house wearing, hair uncombed, and nobody notices. A place with pool, or darts if you're lucky enough to find them. A place where you can have a drink elbow to elbow with someone twice your age. It has regulars, and it loves them anyway. Sort of a Dive [Pour House](https://www.pourhouseoceanside.com/?ref=thesort.news) Oceanside Pour House is the one to hit if you're after live music. Shows run most nights of the week, with Wednesdays reserved for open mic — plus karaoke and the occasional vinyl DJ set when there's no band booked. It's a great place to catch a band you've never heard of and leave a fan, good drinks in hand the whole time. ![a Coors Banquet bottle beads with condensation on an illuminated plywood bar](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/4-DSC_2703-1.jpg) 📷 photo credit: The Sort Sort of a Dive [The Shanty](https://theshantylounge.com/?ref=thesort.news) Cardiff The Shanty has meant "welcome home" since 1964, and looks the part — the same wood bar and walls for over sixty years, just north of San Elijo State Beach. Inside is classic dive; outside is a proper patio, fire pits and all, built for staying past one drink. Pool, cornhole, a jukebox worth feeding, and food trucks most weekends. Dogs welcome, which tells you most of what you need to know. We'll save you a stool. — The Sort ### Issue No. 3: Feeling Sort of Gifty URL: https://thesort.news/issue-no-3/ Last updated: 2026-08-22T18:32:53.000Z ISSUE NO. 03 · NORTH COUNTY, SAN DIEGO # Sort of Gifty Most gift guides are organized by price point or by category — "gifts for her," "gifts for the home" — which is only useful if you don't actually know the person. These are organized by the person. Each shop solves for someone specific. One of them works for everyone else. Sort of Gifty Always Hungry Grocery & Goods Carlsbad For the tomato girls and fishwives in your life. Always Hungry stocks tinned fish and charcuterie meats, naturally leavened sourdough, and small-batch finds from local makers — the kind of pantry provisions that make a gift basket feel considered rather than assembled. There is a sardine-shaped flask here. It is not a joke — it is the exact right gift for the exact right person. They've also added frozen meals and fresh-baked treats to the lineup, so it works just as well for whoever's picking up dinner while they're at it. Fill a basket and call it done. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/E242F511-DAC3-4964-8845-9E6ACE66C6BD.JPG) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/7E610028-6778-4481-A73A-4694DC11FA90-2.JPG) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/8C3ED271-4F9F-443C-A507-E3DDBE6AAC2C-1.JPG) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/37511508-1E11-4B74-8E03-AEC32C7AD2ED-2.JPG) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/7F426582-72F4-447D-877B-531A5966A754-1.JPG) 📷 photo credit: Always Hungry Sort of Gifty Daydream Escondido For the friend who will notice that you found something made by a real person. Daydream on Grand Avenue is a concept shop built around local makers and artists — pressed flower jewelry, resin art, handmade candles, and a selection that rotates enough to always turn up something new. There's a mini bookstore tucked inside too, for the bookish friend. Downtown Escondido is worth the trip in on its own. This is a good reason to make it. Sort of Gifty Goblin Shark Emporium Oceanside For the friend who already has everything except the thing they didn't know existed. Goblin Shark Emporium on Coast Highway stocks vintage clothing, vinyl, local art, and gifts that don't turn up anywhere else in North County. A different local artist gets the gallery wall every month, so there's always something new. A pothos or a snake plant — something genuinely unkillable — is a better gift than it sounds. Terra Bella makes it easy to leave with the right one. Sort of Gifty Vessel Refills Escondido For the friend who's serious about zero waste, or the one who's expecting and trying to build good habits early for someone new. Vessel Refills is a queer woman-owned, zero-waste shop in downtown Escondido — the bulk bar covers soap, shampoo, lotion, and laundry detergent, and there's a free jar library if you show up without a container. They also stock natural rubber baby toys and a small selection of pre-built sustainable gifts, for whoever isn't quite ready to bring their own jar yet. The rare gift that quietly says you paid attention. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/7-IMG_3791.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/8-IMG_3792.jpg) 📷 photo credit: Vessel Refills Sort of Gifty Yes Yes Collective Solana Beach For the friend who comes home with a story about where they found the thing, not just the thing. Yes Yes Collective on Cedros Ave mixes new and vintage — estate jewelry in glass cases at the counter, fruit-shaped candles, silver jewelry, and enough to look at that you won't be in and out quickly. The kind of shop that makes finding the right gift feel less like an errand. Sort of Gifty Mila's Flower Stand Carlsbad For everyone else. When nothing above fits the person, these flowers do — genuinely striking arrangements, not a gas-station afterthought. No occasion required, no explanation needed. The right call when nothing else jumps out, and the one rec on this list that is never wrong. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/Milas1.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/0c/cf/0ccf39f2-33b0-4776-aa79-3311ccdf479a/content/images/2026/07/Milas2.jpg) 📷 photo credit: Mila's Flower Stand Sort Saves One more thing: Sort Saves is live — a curated handful of exclusive deals from local spots, dropping the first Monday of each month, yours if you're a subscriber. Happy Fourth. — The Sort ### Issue No. 1: Feeling Sort of New Here URL: https://thesort.news/issue-no-01/ Last updated: 2026-08-28T05:05:49.000Z ISSUE NO. 01 · NORTH COUNTY, SAN DIEGO # Feeling Sort of New Here **North County** is its own ecosystem — not a suburb of San Diego, not an extension of LA. It's slower mornings and too-fast sunsets, a coastline that doesn't try as hard as it could, and a confidence the rest of the county hasn't quite figured out yet. We have our own coffee culture, our own bar culture, our own version of a good Tuesday night. That's what this newsletter is for. **Welcome to The Sort.** **A few things to know up front:** this is free, it comes out every Thursday, and it's built around a feeling, not a category. **Feeling Sort of Stingy** gets you the best deals. **Feeling Sort of Romantic** gets you the date night. **Feeling Sort of Awestruck** gets you the best views. You get the idea. The weekly issue is free and public — it lives on the site and lands in your inbox every Thursday if you subscribe. **But subscribers get two more things nobody else does.** Every six weeks or so, we publish **Sorted** — a practical, subscriber-only guide to navigating North County and San Diego. First up: *Sorted: North County Transit District* — everything you need to actually ride the Coaster, the Sprinter, and the routes that connect them. Free to subscribers, useful enough to forward. On the first Monday of every month, we drop **Sort Saves** — a small, curated handful of exclusive deals and offers from local spots. Not a coupon circular. Just a few genuinely good ones, from places we'd actually send you to. Both are free with your subscription. That's the whole pitch. As this thing grows, we'll crowdsource the best of each North County neighborhood, and we'll chase down the rumors too: *is the Buccaneer Cafe burrito actually the best breakfast burrito in town, like everyone keeps telling us?* We're going to find out. Here's what that actually means in practice: everything in here has been researched and vouched for — visited, talked about, cross-referenced with people who know. Not surfaced because it's trending, not chosen because it photographs well, not here because someone got paid to say so. If you're after whatever's currently going viral, there are plenty of accounts for that already. This isn't one of them. **This is for the places with real culture behind them — the ones worth your actual time, not just your camera roll.** One more thing — we love San Diego, too. North County might be its own thing, but the big sister city is less than an hour south and always worth the trip, especially by train. (*We will not shut up about public transit. Consider yourself warned.*) Semi-regular issues will head down the coast — Coaster recommended, window seat required — and will explore the best ways for us northern folk to spend a day or an evening down the coast in SD proper. We've wanted to do this for a long time — North County deserved it, and we figured it was about time someone did. What we weren't expecting was how genuinely overwhelming the response has already been before we've even sent a single issue. Turns out y'all were feeling sort of hungry for this. We're so glad you're here. Tell us what you want to see, or send us a lead, at [hello@thesort.news](mailto:hello@thesort.news). Anyway, here's a first rec to whet your appetite: Sort of a Sleeper Shoots Fish & Beer: The Potato Taco Oceanside The potato taco is sneaky good. The kind of order that sounds like an afterthought and turns out to be the move — the perfect sponge to soak up that West Coast IPA you ordered without thinking too hard about it. A solid first stop if you're getting to know the neighborhood the right way. New here too, in a sense. Glad you're sorting through it with us. — The Sort
